Salt Spring Forum Presents Monia Mazigh: Muslim Women in Canada

05/20/2016 7:30 pm

With debates about the niqab, refugees, and security against terrorism happening both nationally and internationally, what challenges do Muslim women in Canada face?

The Salt Spring Forum hosts author and human rights advocate Dr. Monia Mazigh for a special evening discussion exploring this important topic.

Monia Mazigh immigrated from Tunisia to Canada in 1991. She was catapulted onto the public stage in 2002 when her husband Maher Arar was deported to Syria, tortured, and held without charge for over a year.

Mazigh campaigned vigorously for Arar’s release and later fought to re-establish his reputation. She is widely attributed with bringing the US policy of “extraordinary rendition” into international public view, which is an important part of world history.

Mazigh wrote a memoir entitled Hope and Despair, about her own ordeal after her husband was arrested. She has also written two novels: Mirrors and Mirages, which tells the stories of four Muslim women living in Canada; and Du pain et du jasmine, about the events of the Arab Spring.

Tickets for the Friday, May 20th 7:30 pm event at ArtSpring are available at ArtSpring (250-537-2102 or www.tickets.artspring.ca) or Salt Spring Books. $15 Forum Members; $20 General Admission.
