The Islands Marketplace Team

Andrew and Sandi Poystila, moved to Salt Spring Island in 2003, from Burnaby, BC. After enjoying successful careers in the lower mainland, they knew it was time to retreat to a more laid back lifestyle when their daughter was born. Salt Spring Island was the perfect place to raise a new family.

After 17 years experience in advertising and design, and a short stint with the local newspaper, they felt it was "no better time than now" to start their own magazine. They began The Islands Marketplace in 2006, after becoming inspired by the islands creative entrepreneurial spirit and local economy. Having many years experience specifically related to newspaper classified advertising, they knew they could provide islanders with a unique and much needed island service - A Local FREE Classified Ad magazine.

"Free classified advertising for private party citizens benefits everyone, including the environment, and it has worked extremely well in other communities," Andrew says. "And when you love what you do, it's a win/win situation."

The Islands Marketplace also offers more than just advertising, namely a calendar of events, horoscope, photos, contests, stories, crossword puzzle and/or word search. The Islands Marketplace is delivered by Andrew and Sandi every second Friday, where readers can pick them up for free. The magazine manages its expenses with paid commercial advertisers.

"It has been very exciting to be able to print a fun, entertaining and informative new magazine that we can all enjoy at the coffee shop, on the ferry, at the park or in the comfort of our own home or business," the new publisher says. "The feedback from the public has been very positive and overwhelming."

In March 2008 Andrew and Sandi welcomed Teresa Forbes to the Marketplace Team. Teresa has helped in the advertising sales department as well as in magazine delivery and brainstorming some great ideas. She has recently been seen on the local theatrical stage in a performance called "Born Yesterday." With Teresa's help and keen sense of detail, the Marketplace Free Classified Ad Magazine will continue to provide excellent community service.

With a new baby expected in the family fold, Sandi has decided to take her "maternity" leave and step back from her usual design and deliveries. Andrew has taken over completely and is proving to be an excellent asset in the design and layout department.
